I’m doing my best to be active today, despite the lack of sleep the night before. Today’s distance came from 2 sets of 30-min indoor walk workouts during the workday, an outdoor walk after work, and a benchmark run to get started on my 10km run training plan using Jeff Galloway’s run-walk-run method, courtesy of Garmin.
I decided to set a stretch goal of running the 10km distance at the North Bay Road Race in September. Since I’ve never had an officially timed run beyond a 5k, preparing for it is going to be an interesting experience. The training plan lasts 14 weeks and culminates on race day.
Being able to finish within the allowed race time is what’s important. I have no time goal in mind, other than completing it twice the time it takes me to run a 5k. Of course, twice the distance means building endurance for a longer run, and that’s where the real work is.
Why am I doing this, you ask? I wanted to challenge myself in completing the next distance goal after the 5k. Being able to run a longer distance is motivation enough. The thought that I could do it if I set my mind to it is exciting. It’s also a great way to incorporate structured training that complements my daily step goal.
The North Bay Road Race also supports a good cause benefiting our local community. Every registration includes a donation to the YMCA Northeastern Ontario, which goes towards the Fill the Bus campaign. Participating in the event is my way of supporting it.

Here’s to making ‘active time’ a fun and memorable activity. I love the summertime!
