Day 204 Y25 Thought of the Day_Ordinary Heroes

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.

Joseph Campbell

I reflect upon the ‘ordinary’ heroes among us. The ones who made sacrifices and lived a life of service to others without expecting anything in return.

I think about single mothers, who due to various circumstances, have to carry the burden of raising children on their own. They do so tirelessly, without complaint, day in and day out.

Yes, it is a parent’s responsibility to provide for their children’s needs. However, single-parent households face an even greater struggle, especially when they lack a support system to help alleviate some of these burdens.

Their sacrifices in raising their children to become decent human beings who positively give back to society speak volumes of their selflessness fueled by love.

I think about those who’ve mentored me at work. Yes, it is a Manager’s responsibility to coach and support their employees’ career aspirations and growth.

However, I have been with a few who not only taught me all that I need to do well in my career, made work enjoyable and fulfilling, but were also there for me when I went through some of the toughest times in my personal life.

I think about the volunteers at the local church where I regularly go. They took care of the many things that running a church entails. Even when they have jobs and families, they are committed to doing the ministries that they are responsible for.

Whether it is the upkeep of the church facilities, aiding the Minister for an enjoyable worship service each Sunday, running the children’s programs each term, or facilitating the outreach programs that connect with the needs of the community.

Yes, as people of faith, it is our duty as Christians to serve. But the love and care that these volunteers pour into their service to the church and the congregation is a testament to God’s work in serving others.

They are all heroes in my eyes, having exemplified what it means to make sacrifices or be of service to others in different ways. In doing so, they made a profound impact not only in my life but also in the lives of countless others they’ve touched.
